Whether a solo traveler or in good company, CASE is best experienced in a safe and familiar environment. Take the time to set yourself up in a space where you can: "Let Go. Be Open. Trust".
Physical safety and psychological security are critical components of a successful CASE session. Take your time in setting yourself up for an optimal experience.
Provisioning is the name of the game: Make sure you have all the supplies and resources that you need to dive in!
What you bring to your experience is just as important as where the journey takes place. Start by setting an intention. Approach it with a beginner's mind.
Be Curious:
"What do I need right now?"
"What do I hope to gain (or lose)?"
"What are my goals for the session?"
"What am I bringing to the session?"
"Where do I find myself right now?"
"How can I make the most of the time?"
We all need back up and supports - no matter the challenge. This helps us develop a helpful structure for these experiences.
Whether it is someone who you know that asks good questions but is a better listener; someone who can give you a ride to the corner store or help make you a meal when you're not able to or up for it; someone who reminds you about what is most important to you and has your back and best interests in mind. Let that person know what you're up to and express gratitude for their support!
For every meaningful journey, it starts by preparing ourselves for what we can expect to encounter (and also consider the unexpected).
Ask yourself:
"What would make this a meaningful journey?"
"What supplies will help me go deep in my explorations?"
"Can I set aside the time and do I need to tie up any loose ends?"
"What resources do I already have access to that can help me get in to and through the experience?"
"What practices can I do before I begin the journey to help me along the way?"
We are natural born explorers - and all share a common will to make meaning of our experiences. No question is off limits as you embark on your journey. There is an abundance of purpose and meaning to discover.
"Have I asked myself the important questions in life?"
"What matters most to me and what can I do about it?"
"How can I develop a practice that nourishes and sustains me?"
"What am I good at and gives me a sense of enjoyment and mastery?"
"What areas of personal growth can I explore further?"
"How can I give back to my community and share with others?"
Here's a helpful way to tune in to the S.T.U.F.F. of your experience. Notice this moment by observing and describing:
" What sensations did I notice?” E.g., temperature, weight, tension/discomfort
“What was the quality of my thoughts?” E.g., busy, blank, focused, disorganized
“Did I notice any desires/urges to move or act?” E.g., scratch an itch, dance, quit
“How do I feel?” E.g., calm, agitated
"How did I managing the experience?" E.g., resisted, welcomed, tolerated
S.T.U.F.F. (De Leo, 2013)
The time is now - and in this moment you are whole and can begin to integrate the journey explored thus far. Courageously venture back in to your past and breathe new life to lessons learned with loving kindness and forgiveness (revisioning). Take liberties in creating a better tomorrow and a future that has yet to unfold (envisioning).
Be where you are! It's all for you!
